Hello fintech friends,
This week Germany's central bank, the Bundesbank, published a report setting out the main challenges agentic payments pose, and what needs to be considered as they develop.
The report suggests the payment rails themselves may stay largely as they are, or at least won't be replaced wholesale, and that “structural changes are… expected less in settlement”, but more likely, “in the opening and standardisation of interfaces to traditional payment infrastructures for autonomous AI agents”.
The report contends that the choice of payment method could become dynamic as agents take on a bigger role in payments.
AI agents could handle the selection of payment instrument as well as the automated and encrypted transmission of payment information to the merchant or payment service provider without additional user interaction.
It also touches on growing concern around European payment sovereignty, noting that "at present... it is mainly non-European market participants that are offering solutions for agentic payments."
The full report is worth a read, with plenty for industry bodies, policymakers, payments companies, regulators, and even merchants to consider.
